How It Started

Like many homeowners, we were living with period sash windows that looked great – but didn’t perform.

• Cold draughts in winter
• Condensation on the glass
• Heat loss
• Noise from outside
• High heating bills

Replacing the windows wasn’t a simple option, especially given the high cost and limitations set by local conservation and planning rules.

Traditional secondary glazing solutions, also expensive, had an outmoded, ungainly design that served to diminish a windows original period charm.

The Idea

WindowSkins was born from a simple idea:

“There must be a better way to improve window performance without replacing them.”

Like many homeowners, we experienced first-hand how uncomfortable older windows can make a home.

We wanted a solution that would:

• Improve insulation
• Reduce draughts
• Minimise condensation
• Reduce noise
• Improve affordability

…but without changing or altering the original windows.

That’s what led to the development of our WindowSkins magnetic secondary glazing system.

The Team

We are a small independent company with an emphasis on automation, product delivery and attention to detail.

The Retrofit Challenge

Window retrofit is challenging.

The concept, at it’s simplest, is the measuring of a square window, to cut and fit a correspondingly sized square glazing panel.

Sounds simple right? The reality, is somewhat different.

For every window, there are a significant number of data points that require capture. At a minimum this will include:

• Window Size
• Window Geometry
• Window Colour
• Window Condition
• Window Location
• Window Image

Additionally, for every window, there are a complementary set of data points required to specify the desired product. Again, at a minimum, this will include:

• Panel Placement
• Panel Thickness
• Panel Size
• Panel Geometry
• Magnet Width
• Panel Finish

Ancillary requirements (obstructions, shutters, bespoke client instructions) add further complexity. One must also hope that human error has not been introduced.

Failure to observe and accurately capture this information at the correct time, results in aesthetically displeasing and ill-fitting (or even unusable) panels. This is costly to remediate and, can lead to overall client dissatisfaction.

This risk of failure is especially prevalent for handcrafted, asymmetrical, period windows.

The question then becomes “How does one manage this risk, to ensure consistent and predictable retrofit results?”

Current competing solutions generally employ one of these strategies to offset the risk (& cost) of retrofit failure:

1) Risk Transfer: Also known as the DIY option. This is where responsibility is passed to the client. Problems with this method are not limited to:

• The clients ability to digest and follow complex instructions
• The clients ability to accurately measure
• The clients ability to undertake the fitting process
• The client having all the necessary tooling

Notably, the issue of irregular windows, is not addressed with DIY options, so results will always be less than perfect.

2) Higher Cost: This is where an ‘artisanal’ yet manual approach to retrofit is adopted.

• Costs are higher due to the largely manual administrative process and, consequently higher failure rate.
• Final finish is highly dependent on the skill and experience of the surveyors and fitters.
• Quality is less likely to be compromised (due to the offsetting cost increase).

3) Lower Quality: as per the ‘artisanal’ approach above, but instead, quality and service is sacrificed to keep prices competitive.

Either way, existing methods suggests that where retrofit is concerned, a compromise must be made – time, quality or cost.
