Why WindowSkins
Why should I choose WindowSkins instead of Double Glazing?
Whilst double glazing usually offers better energy efficiency (when compared to both traditional and magnetic secondary glazing), high costs and long payback times (20-30 years) can make this an unattractive option for most.
For listed buildings and those in conservation areas, double glazing is generally prohibited due to its negative impact on the character and outward appearance of the building.
As well as the usual disruption and mess caused by outright window replacement, there is an unrivalled elegance to timber windows which simply can’t be matched by modern uPVC.
Often described as ‘the eyes of the facade’ to highlight their importance to its character, original windows have obvious aesthetic attributes. Handcrafted in original timber, they are stylistically in keeping within the context of a traditional property.
Well maintained timber windows can last for centuries and, there is sound argument against the destruction of such architectural heritage. Indeed, the quality of timber used in the 18th and 19th century was superior, being slow grown in cold environments from Baltic forests producing a dense, tight-grained and very durable wood. Such quality is difficult to find today.
Coupled with the minimalist, near-invisible design of WindowSkins, traditional windows CAN be energy efficient whilst continuing to preserve the original period character of your home.
And, at significant lower cost, with a quicker return on investment, WindowSkins are an affordable, effective alternative.
Why should I choose WindowSkins instead of Traditional Secondary Glazing?
Traditional secondary glazing, typically made from glass and aluminium, can be expensive and, has a somewhat outdated aesthetic.
Due to the weight of glass, bulky frames are usually required, which can lead to an obvious and ungainly appearance that serves to detract from the windows original elegance. Furthermore those bulky frames are consequentially, largely incompatible with existing shutters.
Over time, sliding units can jam, making it difficult to open the window. The weight of the glass units can also make cleaning difficult.
Traditional secondary glazing units may also take up precious space along the window sill, often meaning that carefully placed photos, flowers and ornaments will need to be removed or placed elsewhere.
Conversely, WindowSkins are lightweight, frameless and, in pursuit of our minimalist design ethos, make very little impact to the interior style of your home.

With an abundance of online vendors selling DIY kits, it certainly is possible to make this product oneself – assuming one has the time, skill, space and tooling.
Online DIY kit vendors make a persuasive suggestion that the process is simple, often employing simple animations and playful cartoons to allude simplicity. Usually hidden behind this are a long and complex set of measuring and fitting instructions.

Compatibility, Specification & Functionality
What types of windows are WindowSkins compatible with?
WindowSkins are primarily designed to fit timber sash and casement windows.
They are also well suited for French windows and doors.
With additional preparation, they are an effective solution for stone mullion and crittall windows.
Finally, for a triple glazed enhancement, WindowSkins are a great upgrade for double glazed uPVC windows.

Are WindowSkins compatible with internal shutters?
WindowSkins offers excellent compatibility with most types of shutters, including modern plantation, café and traditional solid panel shutters.
Are WindowSkins compatible with curved or arched windows?

Can you colour match WindowSkins to my paintwork?
WindowSkins are available in matt white or a natural ‘Brown-Black’ as standard.
Unlike most, our white magnetic tapes are not just white on the front face but also both leading edges.
This ensures there are no unsightly black lines on either panel or window.
It is also possible to colour match using most water based paints or from an extensive range of wood grain vinyl finishes (at additional cost).
Is it possible to ventilate my home when the WindowSkins are fitted?
Yes.
For sash windows, using the supplied venting arm, it is possible to open the window with the window skin in place (read more).
For smaller casement windows, due to the ease of handling, they are simply removed and placed aside. The window is then opened in the normal way (no venting arm is required).
Are WindowSkins fitted on the inside or outside?
WindowSkins are designed to fit inside your home.
What panel types and thicknesses do you offer?
WindowSkins are constructed using one of the following panel types;
- 1.5mm PETG (curved windows)
- 2mm PETG (standard build)
- 3mm Acrylic XT (recommended)
- 4mm Acrylic XT (best for noise)
PETG vs AcrylicXT Panels
PETG panels offer excellent impact resistance, allowing for a lightweight panel that is flexible, yet easy to handle, all whilst retaining strength.
For 3mm & 4mm panels, we switch to Acrylic XT.
Acrylic XT is a harder material, giving it increased durability in terms of scuffing and scratch resistance.
It also offers excellent optical clarity and our magnetic tapes show up brighter and whiter (when compared to PETG).
The additional stiffness from thicker materials may be better suited for larger sash windows (especially if draughty).
Finally, it should be noted that both materials provide excellent UV stability.
How do WindowSkins attach to my windows?
WindowSkins attach magnetically, using magnetic tapes adhered to the window frame using a premium adhesive. For tight fittings in limited spaces, we use an intermediary subframe. We also add an additional fixing to ensure the product does not slip or fall off accidentally.
How wide are the magnetic tapes?
For sash windows we typically use 20mm width magnetic tapes
For casement windows we typically used 13mm width magnetic tapes
For oversize installations, it is possible to increase to 25mm width magnetic tapes
What is the total depth (profile) of the WindowSkins when fitted?
The total depth of a fitted WindowSkin is 6mm (using a 3mm AcrylicXT panel).
What is the depth of the magnetic strip left on the window when the WindowSkin is removed?
The magnetic strip is 1.5mm deep, and is matt white on the front face and both leading edges, ensuring no unsightly black lines (on white windows).
It is also possible to colour match using most water based paints or from an extensive range of wood grain vinyl finishes (at additional cost).
How heavy are WindowSkins?
WindowSkins are designed to be lightweight and easy to handle. Typical weights are as follows;
Is it easy to remove the panels?
Yes, no specialist tools are required.
Will my view be impaired by WindowSkins in terms of light transmission or distortion?
No, WindowSkins are optically clear like glass.
WindowSkins will not diminish window aperture size, available light or internal lux levels
Under what circumstances is it not possible to fit WindowSkins?
- Windows with no obvious mounting space (for means of retrofit).
- Windows with significant mounting surface unevenness.
- Windows with penetrating surface moisture or wood rot.
- Windows with significant protruding hardware which cannot be altered or repositioned and, where no alternative mounting position exists.
- Larger Crittall windows with no intermediate timber frame.

Do WindowSkins prevent draught?

Does the thickness of the PET panel affect thermal performance?
Not hugely. Panel thickness does not have a linear relationship to thermal performance.
Thermal performance of WindowSkins is more dependent on the trapping of an insulating layer of air between the window and itself. However, for draughtier windows, the additional stiffness of thicker panels is beneficial during very window weather

Safety
Are WindowSkins Flammable?
PETG has a Class 1 Fire Rating (Excellent Fire Resistance).
Are WindowSkins Toxic?
No. PETG is non-toxic, and is used for food packaging worldwide.
Do WindowSkins Contain BPA
No. Neither our PETG or Acrylic Panels contains harmful BPA (Bisphenol A). Google “Acrylic & BPA” or “PET & BPA” for independent verification.
Are WindowSkins Child Safe?
WindowSkins are child resistant.
They will not break or shatter like glass.
The WindowSkins patented design stops larger WindowSkins from accidentally falling off
Will WindowSkins impede my exit in an emergency?
No. In an emergency, the WindowSkin can either be lifted away from the window or removed altogether, without the need for any tools.

How many site visits are required?
At a minimum, two site visits are required.
The first site visit is to undertake the Precision Survey. The second site visit is for Installation.
Larger projects may require additional site visits
What is your working / travel radius?
We usually travel up to three hours drive (one-way) from our North London premises. This is normally subject to a minimum order quantity (which increases by distance).
We may also travel further for larger projects, which can involve overnight stays (at additional cost)
Can you offer weekend appointments?
We can offer Saturday surveys and installations appointments, albeit on a limited basis.
Sunday appointments are generally unavailable

Is it possible to view an installation in situ?
Whilst we do not have a dedicated showroom, it is sometimes possible to arrange a local viewing (or simply a reference) via an existing customer.
This is of course subject to our earlier clients willingness to accommodate such a request – something which happens surprisingly often.
As we wish to avoid unnecessary disturbance, we only arrange this when both quotation and sample pack have been sent.
Ordering and Cancellation
How do I proceed with an order?
A 30% deposit payment is required to place an order.
We will also arrange a site visit to undertake a Precision Survey
Can I cancel my order?
Yes, there is a time limited scope for order cancellation, which is dependent on how far we have progressed with execution of your order.
Scenario 1 : Deposit has been paid, but you cancel before the Precision Survey Appointment.
Outcome 1 : A full refund of your deposit is available.
Scenario 2 : Deposit has been paid, but you cancel during or immediately after the Precision Survey Appointment.
Outcome 2 : A deposit refund is eligible, less our costs for transport and labour.
Scenario 3 : Precision Survey completed, but you cancel during the Survey Review & Sign-Off phase.
Outcome 3 : A deposit refund is eligible, less our costs for transport, labour and administration.
Scenario 4 : Survey Review & Sign-Off completed.
Outcome 4 : It is no longer possible to cancel the order.
We have tried to make the cancellation options as flexible as possible, whilst taking reasonable precautions to avoid undue loss.
Kindly note that refunds do not apply to holding deposits marked ‘non-refundable’, i.e. smaller amounts paid to take advantage of a time sensitive special offer etc.
Precision Survey Preparation
Should I repair my windows before the precision survey?
Ideally, all windows should be in a good state of repair.
For repairs involving the remediation of internal wood rot, this should be completed prior to precision survey (in case of later dimensional change)
For sash windows, if the repair requires removal of the staff beads (e.g. to repair a broken cord), this should be completed prior to precision survey (in case of later dimensional change or subframe fitting)
Smaller general repairs (e.g. ancillary hardware replacement, glass replacement, leaded lights or external window repair) can usually be completed after the precision survey or post-installation. However, please check with for further advice.
What other preparations should I make prior to the precision survey?
There are few things which can help to make the precision survey smoother;
- If there are local parking restrictions, we recommend arranging a visitor parking permit. These are usually subsidised for local residents and, can avoid higher parking charges being passed on.
- Kindly ensure that there is adequate clear space in front of each window – ideally 1.2 metres at a minimum – thereby ensuring enough space for us to work (especially where step ladders are required).
Things one needn’t worry about;
- There is no need to remove blinds or curtains – we will deal with those if and when required
- Heavy furniture can be moved on the day – we are happy to assist with this
Pre-Installation Preparation
Should I repair my windows before installation?

Should I paint my windows before installation?
If the internal paintwork is in poor condition (flaking, powdery or chipped) then it may be advised but, is not generally mandatory.
The WindowSkins subframes and magnetic tapes are fine to overpaint, so painting can occur at a later date.
If painting prior to installation, we strongly suggest a good quality primer/undercoat is used.
Matt finishes should be avoided, with a preference for tougher sheens such as modern eggshell (40% sheen) or full gloss (95% sheen).
The paints should be specifically designed for wood/plastic/metal.
A minimum 10 day dry time should be allowed for the paint to cure and harden (this may be longer in wet and damp condition)
Should I clean my windows before installation?
Whilst not entirely necessary, if convenient, it is generally advised.
What other preparations should I make prior to installation?
There are few things which can help to make an installation smoother;
- If there are local parking restrictions, we recommend arranging a visitor parking permit. These are usually subsidised for local residents and, can avoid higher parking charges being passed on.
- It is important that window surfaces are clean and dry to ensure good adhesion.
If windows are wet with condensation, this should be mopped up using a towel or window vac and, we then suggest switching on the heating and leaving the rooms ventilated to facilitate drying. A dehumidifier will also help with this. - Kindly ensure that there is adequate clear space in front of each window – ideally 1.2 metres at a minimum – thereby ensuring enough space for us to work (especially where step ladders are required).
- On the day of installation – a slightly cooler room temperature between 16-18 degrees C is ideal as it can prevent humidity build-up from overheating (sweaty) fitters!
Things one needn’t worry about;
- There is no need to remove blinds or curtains – we will deal with those if and when required
- Heavy furniture can be moved on the day of installation – we are happy to assist with this
Installation and Fitting
How long does it take to fit?
We’ve invested time optimising our fitting process to ensure we take as little time of yours.
A typical sash WindowSkin takes between 20 and 40 minutes to fit.
A typical casement WindowSkin takes between 12 and 24 minutes to fit (per panel).
Most installations are completed within the day.
Is installation messy?
Definitely not – we employ a ‘clean working’ ethos so we always aim to leave your home as tidy as we found it.
We always wear shoe covers and clean up after ourselves.
Is installation noisy or disruptive?
Actually it’s pretty quiet – the noisiest tool we use is a 12v impact driver.
The use of hammers and drills tend to be a rare occurrence.
It’s usually quite normal for occupants to continue with their day, working from home, whilst we get on with the job
Care and Maintenance
How long is your warranty?
We provide a comprehensive three year repair or replace warranty with phone, email and postal support.
How should I store my WindowSkins in summer?
WindowSkins are designed to be easily removed, and can be stored during the summer months.
Whilst not a requirement (they may be left in place year round), this can be convenient for frequently opened windows.
They can be wrapped in bubble wrap or a soft cotton sheet, and stored flat under a double bed.
Alternatively, we can provide felt lined storage sleeves at additional cost.
Every WindowSkin has a room and window specific identifying label making storage and replacement simple.
How do I clean my WindowSkins?
The key rule for WindowSkins is no harsh abrasives.
We recommend gentle cleaning using mild detergent, water and a microfibre cloth.
A quality soft rubber or silicone squeegee may also be used, with light pressure, for larger areas.
For smaller spot cleaning, isopropyl alcohol or non-vinegar glass cleaner may be used with soft tissue.
How long will my WindowSkins last?
With proper maintenance, it is reasonable to assume that your WindowSkins will last over ten years.
All measurements are stored digitally, so in the unfortunate case of accidental damage, WindowSkins are easily replaced
Do you offer post warranty maintenance and servicing?
Absolutely, we offer ad-hoc and yearly inspection and servicing options.

Payment, Pricing and Terms
How do you determine your prices?
Our quoted prices are formulaically determined by a number of factors, primarily:
– Number of WindowSkins
– Size of WindowSkins
– Material Costs
– Labour Costs
– Administration and Overheads
– Delivery Costs
As a result, there will be occasions where our quoted prices are outside of our stated guidance prices due to a significant increase in one or more of these costs.
We will always make this known before any contractual obligation takes place.

When will I need to pay?
An initial deposit of 30% is required to process any order, with the remaining balance payable upon completion of fitting.
What method of payment do you accept?
We accept Debit Card, Bank Transfers (BACS) and Cheque (maximum £5000 per cheque).
We also accept Cash payments by prior agreement
Due to excessive fees, we no longer accept Credit Card payments (unless by prior agreement)

How do I obtain Section 75 Protection?
Whilst we no longer accept credit card payments due to excessive fees, it is still possible to obtain section 75 protection by making a small payment.
